Nature: Three ways ChatGPT helps me in my academic writing

As an editor for the academic journals "Personality and Individual Differences" and "Psychology of Leaders and Leadership," Dritjon Gruda shares his valuable insights on leveraging the capabilities of ChatGPT to enhance academic writing in a recent article published in the prestigious journal "Nature." The article, titled "Three ways ChatGPT helps me in my academic writing," explores how this powerful AI tool can be used to refine research papers, assist in peer review, and improve the quality of editorial feedback.

  1. Polishing Academic Papers When using AI to revise a paper, Gruda emphasizes the importance of providing clear context and instructions, including an overview of the topic, main arguments, and areas that need improvement. He suggests using prompts like:

"I am writing a paper on [topic] for a top journal in [field]. In the following sections, I am trying to convey [specific points]. Please rephrase to improve clarity, coherence, and conciseness, ensuring smooth transitions between paragraphs. Remove colloquial content and adjust to professional terminology."

By providing such instructions, AI can more effectively help optimize your text. Regardless of the generative AI tool you use, the key to success lies in providing accurate and clear instructions.

  1. Peer Review Assistance During the peer review process, AI can help summarize key points, organize and articulate your feedback, and assist in drafting your comments. Gruda recommends using prompts like:

"Assume you are an expert and scholar with over 20 years of academic experience. Based on my summary of a paper in [field], which focuses on [general topic], please provide a detailed review in the following order: 1) Briefly discuss its core content; 2) Point out its limitations; 3) Explain the significance of each limitation in order of importance. Maintain a concise and professional tone."

This approach not only enhances the quality of the review but also brings insights and perspectives that you may not have considered before.

  1. Optimizing Editorial Feedback ChatGPT can also play a role in drafting feedback letters from editors to paper authors. By inputting the strengths and weaknesses of the manuscript into the AI, it can generate corresponding feedback.

Gruda suggests using prompts like:

"Based on these notes, draft a letter to the author. Highlight the key issues with the manuscript and clearly explain why, despite the interesting topic, the manuscript may not be mature enough for publication. Avoid colloquialisms, be direct, and maintain a professional and respectful tone."

This approach not only improves the quality of the feedback but also fosters positive communication between editors and authors.

Gruda also points out that AI's first response may not be perfect. You should continue to communicate with it, provide more information, or refine your instructions to ensure it accurately understands your intentions and delivers the desired results.

ChatGPT is not just your assistant but also your collaborator, helping you progress on your academic journey. By leveraging its capabilities and providing clear instructions, researchers and editors can enhance the quality of their work and streamline their processes, ultimately leading to more impactful contributions to their respective fields.
